Professor Asoke K. Nandi FREng and his co-authors have been selected to receive the 2025 IEEE Transactions on Radiation and Plasma Medical Sciences Best Paper Award, a prestigious award in the field of technology and application areas related to radiation- and plasma-based medical sciences.
Reflecting on the award, Professor Nandi states: “It is an honour for my co-authors and me to receive this award. We wish to thank the IEEE for the award and our peers for selecting our work.”
The winning paper, DefED-Net: Deformable Encoder-Decoder Network for Liver and Liver Tumor Segmentation, presents a breakthrough in medical image analysis by introducing a new approach, improving the accuracy of liver and liver tumour segmentation from CT scans as well as reducing the model size. This significant work addresses persistent challenges in medical imaging, including the irregular shape of liver tumours and the loss of spatial information during image processing.
The IEEE Best Paper Award will be formally presented at the 2025 IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging, where Professor Nandi and his co-authors will be honoured for their contributions to the field.
This recognition further confirms Brunel’s growing reputation in artificial intelligence in a variety of engineering applications including medical sciences and underscores Brunel’s commitment to research that delivers real-world impacts.
