STEM Futures is a partnership of organisations across industry, academia, and the public sector hosted by the Government Office for Science, which provides opportunities to exchange and promote STEM knowledge. These opportunities include shadowing, mentoring, placements and secondments.
STEM Futures was launched in May 2023 to deliver on the priorities outlined in the Government Reform Agenda by increasing knowledge exchange in STEM. By providing opportunities inside and outside of government, STEM Futures ensures STEM expertise is applied in policymaking and services while also providing valuable development opportunities to representatives in partner organisations across academia, government, and industry.
The Government Science and Engineering (GSE) profession provides oversight and strategic direction for STEM Futures. The STEM Futures Framework Agreement enables interchange opportunities across organisations. These opportunities are developed collaboratively through technical hubs, which group partners into communities of practice aligned with areas of interest. Brunel University of London has joined the following hubs:
- Decarbonisation. This hub focusses on building relationships to identify opportunities for facilitating knowledge exchange between partner organisations, focusing on decarbonisation of the 4 main sectors: Energy, Transport, Buildings, and Industry. Core membership: Babcock, DESNZ, DfT, DSTL, Home Office, HSE, IPO, UKCEH, UKRI, University of Exeter, University of Manchester. Brunel representative: Prof Gareth Taylor
- Data. This hub focusses on building relationships and facilitating knowledge exchange between partner organisations to strengthen the communication and awareness of data science applications between different sectors of the UK. Core membership: AWE, Dstl, NPL, DSIT, APHA, Home Office, Cranfield University, Babcock, Ordnance Survey, IPO, Kingston University, University of Exeter, UKRI/STFC, MBDA.
